Why are memecoins popular? Dogecoin and internet meme culture

Coins inspired by dog pictures or internet jokes sometimes attract enormous attention. “Memecoin” describes cryptocurrencies associated with trends, characters and community culture. A compelling story brings people together, and that attention can turn into trading.

Terms to know when looking at memecoins

  • Meme: An image or expression that spreads as people imitate and share it.
  • Community: The people who discuss an asset and create content about it. Its size and activity do not necessarily equal real demand to use the asset.
  • Tokenomics: A token's structure, including supply, allocation, further issuance and burning.
  • Liquidity: The depth of the market where people can actually buy and sell. Plenty of attention can coexist with little liquidity.

How did Dogecoin begin?

Dogecoin began in 2013, based on the Shiba Inu meme popular on the internet at the time. Not every memecoin is built the same way as Dogecoin. Some run their own networks; others are tokens that can be issued easily on an existing blockchain.

Many tokens also copy names or images. A familiar character does not establish a connection to the original project. A celebrity mentioning a token does not guarantee its management or safety.

Check the story and the asset structure separately

A tiny price per token can still imply a large market size when supply is huge. A claim such as “it only needs to reach ₩1” is meaningful only if you also calculate the market capitalization at that price.

There are four main things to check: the official network and contract address, concentration in a few wallets, liquidity available when selling, and powers retained by administrators. Distinguish exchange custody wallets from individual wallets, too. Checking these things does not eliminate the risk of falling prices or fraud.

A meme may stay popular for years or lose attention within days. Treat the enjoyment of joining a community separately from the decision to put money into an asset.
