What are RWAs? What changes when property or bonds are tokenized?

RWA stands for Real World Assets. In crypto, it usually refers to connecting real-world assets or rights relating to them with tokens. Property, bonds and gold are common examples, but using a token does not make every product's structure the same.

Who stands between the asset and the token?

  • Underlying asset: The asset connected to a token's value or rights.
  • Issuer: The party issuing the token and setting its terms.
  • Custodian: A party that may hold or manage the underlying asset.
  • Redemption: Returning tokens to receive cash or assets under specified conditions.
  • Tokenization: Representing some information about an asset or rights in digital-token form.

The key questions are who performs these roles and what rights a token holder can exercise against whom. Being able to transfer a token does not by itself establish that legal ownership of the underlying asset transfers with it.

Trading hours and redemption hours may differ

Even if a blockchain operates continuously, the underlying asset's market or the issuer's redemption operation may follow business hours. A token trading 24 hours a day does not mean it can always be turned into cash at the same price.

Minimum redemption amounts, fees, processing periods, identity checks or residency restrictions may apply. Selling to another user on an exchange and redeeming directly with the issuer are also different routes.

What to check beyond the RWA label

  1. Read whether you receive ownership, an entitlement to income or a debt claim.
  2. Check who verifies the underlying asset's existence and custody, and how often.
  3. Check procedures if the issuer or custodian runs into trouble.
  4. Distinguish contract vulnerabilities from price, credit, currency and liquidity risks.

A link to a real-world asset does not automatically guarantee principal or returns. One report or reserve statement does not establish every legal right and redemption possibility, so read the product's official terms too. This article does not recommend any particular product; actual rights and trading conditions vary by product.
